Monkey King Express Chinese Kitchen in Vancouver Island

Staff was really nice, but the it was the worst Chinese food our family had ever had. We ended up throwing it in the garbage. Greasy, no flavor. We ordered several dishes and not one of them was enjoyable. To bad,wold be nice to have a good Chinese place close to home.

Took 30minutes longer then time told. Noodles where dry and needed more sauce. Way over priced for what you pay. Was hoping for better.

The food was allright but there was some confusion going on.I almost called the owner to complain.

5 dishes all were excellent. Much better than Cobble Hill. It took me 2 yesrs to try Monkey King but this was our 2nd time and again it was great.

First the good. My son liked the chicken fried rice... The egg rolls weren't bad, and the fortune cookies were okay. The main courses were missing ALL the sauces that should have been on there. almond chicken always has a chicken based gravy on the top otherwise it's just like deep-fried shoe leather. My husband'sweet and sour pork had no sauce on it.none. just deep fried pork and chunks of pineapple. SO DRY. THEY NEED TO SERIOUSLY LOOK UP SOME RECIPES AND START OVER

We had lovely Chinese food here last week! Fresh and authentically tasty. The place itself looks a little plain and would like to see the dishes served in something eco-friendly rather than polystyrene. The wonton soup was truly amazing and we will definitely be back. Thank you 😀

Big man's dun taste good Reply: I couldn't figure out how to reply to them comment. I ain't no electronic genius haha. I ate them red chicken. They were pretty darn gud. But then I dun gots me a stomach ache afterwards. Them stomachs aches don't feel to good though. I think that it was worth it though because the taste very darn good.

Ordered at 5:15 Pm last night. Was told it would be ready by 6:30. No big deal. I get there at 6:40. Waited 10 minutes at the counter before I was acknowledged by the lady working there. During that 10 minutes she actually came out and answered the phone and completely ignored me. She finally asked me for my name. I said it was for pickup 20 minutes ago. It still wasn't ready. At 7pm I was about to walk out and it finally came out. She took my debit card and while I was punching in my PIN she went to the back again. It said approved, I stood there waiting for her to come back. She didn't. I left without a receipt or anything. Food is decent, service is totally unacceptable. While I was waiting there were two other people that had been waiting for over 30 mins.

We would go no other place than the Monkey King for the authentic cuisine they offer; it is excellent! Although they have seating; it is limited, so take-out is your best bet. I have read a couple negative reveiws; not sure why??? We often enjoy the fresh and delicious items they offer on their menu. Great prices too! We have never ever had a bad experience, and being particular eaters, we are confident with Monkey King's food. Friendly and accommodating staff. Excellent value and superb quality; always fresh! Stopped by for the first time great place for takeout, food was very fresh and great flavor lots of choices was surprised. I would recommend this place to anyone you can order on your way home and pickup is quick.

Just went here last night...forgot my wallet and the owner was so sweet! She told me to take the food and come back and pay later. The food was delicious 😋

Excellent food! Decor is clean and simple, but not really applicable since it's primary customers are take-out and delivery. Decent portions for a decent price, great for the Shawnigan area!!

It's a little pickup spot in Mill Bay. Buffet or menu items available. Good prices and good portions. Food is good not great but it's a good value overall. Service is really good.

The food ducked so bad the one on was bad

New owners yet again no not the ones that took over a few months ago they were awesome and the food was so good! Food quality is beyond terrible as well the portions of food new owners are providing is much smaller then the previous owner and more expensive. They don’t speak English so when you phone to complain about the food they pass you to the cook who can understand English a little bit. Would not recommend this take-out to anyone! If I had a choice I wouldn’t even then give one star and if I had the energy I would take it all back instead it’s now going in the garbage it’s disgusting I wouldn’t feed this to my family.

walked in asked for take out before I could even read the menu woman she demanded my order.. while I was reading the menu, I could see how impatient she was being. finally ordered my order was taken by one of the 4 small children running around the restaurant all under 10! while waiting phone rang and order was taken by child even younger the who took mine. kids are handle taking orders over the phones and taking payment for orders. very unprofessional.. I haven't eaten the food yet as I'm still waiting for my order but owner's need to reconsider allowing their children all under age 10 to help them run their business.

First time visit this evening and I ordered takeout. Food was made fresh to order despite being near closing time and food was still available on the food counter. We live in Duncan and the food was still piping hot and egg rolls crispy despite the drive. Food tasted great and the staff very friendly. I ordered the dinner for two and the wonton soup which was delicious. Portions were generous to warrant a bit of leftovers...yippee!

I go here every time I come through town. The food is delicious! Arguably the best Chinese food I have ever had. The owners are nice and the staff is great.

This area does not have much in the way of Chinese food and so when I found out new owners had taken over the closed Monkey King restaurant I was pleased. Initially I found the food to be pretty decent, a decent price and I had previously written a review as such. Unfortunately it seems food quality has gone down and fewer ingredients are going into the dishes as well as prices have risen sharply. Unfortunately I suspect my days of ordering from Monkey King are over.

Ordered takeout 2 times and both times it was great. We had the Chow Mein and Beef and Broccoli and an order of their spicy chicken wings. My wife and I agree it is the best Chinese food we have ever had. Tasted fresh and cooked just right both times.

As I move away from the area, have to say the one thing I'll really miss is the wonderful food at Monkey King..I was happy when I found it, and if you get a chance, go for it...wonderful food, helpful friendly staff, and the price is right..i made no headway trying to talk the owner into opening another near where I am moving in Victoria..pity...

My standards are a bit higher than others', perhaps. I cannot agree with the reviews I read here. I live near the restaurant, and really wish it was better! The service I have found excellent, but this applies only to the front end staff, who are consistently friendly and helpful. The food is inconsistent. Sometimes it really is quite good, but other times ... Not. There have been occasions when I am sure that the meat in a dish has been recycled from the previous day's buffet, it was so tough. (I mean, really: tough chicken breast? LOL).

Excellent food! Best House Fried Rice I've had, authentic. Mill Bay is lucky to have such great Chinese Food.

Got a $80 dollar order of Chinese food from here last week and it was awful. Very bland in flavor but the one flavor did stand out was of rotten cheese taste in the pork fried rice. The broccoli was slimy, the chow mein was hard possibly not cooked properly. The strangest thing was the lemon chicken, it was like eating a lemon pound cake surrounding chicken.. gross. It ended up in the garbage that night, waste of money.. Just glad we didn't get the craps or pukes...

New owners and now the place is night and day to before. Food is fresh and very well done. I now highly recommend Monkey King!

Great value and great staff! I work in the area and get the lunch special a couple times a month.

I asked chef Wong to walk my dog while I ate my food. He never brought Leonard back. But other than that I had a great meal! I would definitely come here again.

New to the area, 3 tries and the highlight was sweet n sour pork that tasted like bleach. We drive to Millstream for Chinese now from Mill Bay. They dont try to talk u out of ordering like they do here.......

The wait time was horrendous, Nothing express about the place - first waited 5 /10 minutes before I was even acknowledged at the counter then after making my selection it was a further 45 minutes wait time....I specifically asked for sweet and sour sauce and low and behold when I got home there was NO sweet and sour sauce, first ever Chinese restaurant that doesnt give boiled rice, soy sauce as an automatic... Disappointed:-(The menu selection is pretty poor ; seems like the same thing over and over again just slight difference.And very pricey.. However what they have is tastey enough.Would I go back?? No...

Unacceptable Chinese food. It is hands down, the worst I’ve ever had. Wow. It’s now in the garbage. I highly recommend going elsewhere.

The new owners have REALLY stepped up the food quality here, the chow mein especially is delicious and the won ton soup (that used to be bland and over salted) definitely gets a thumbs up 👍 if you had a disappointing food experience here in the past, you should definitely give it another try!
